Solutions: SpaceX: Entrepreneur’s Race to Space

Solutions: SpaceX: Entrepreneur’s race to space.

All I can say is WOW! Elon’s life story certainly sounds familiar. It parallels that of one Steve Jobs in so many ways. I find it extremely exciting that someone has enough interest and financial backing to mount such an enormous undertaking. Imagine taking on such an adventure with only a degrees in Physics and Business, then being self taught and relying on the skills of others with so much at stake. It was apparent that Elon was devastated by the negative response of idols, former NASA astronauts. This all begs the question, was President Obama and others so impressed with Elon’s aspirations and dreams with SpaceX that they were willing to scrape our NASA Shuttle and Space program?

1st Private Mission to Space Station Set to Launch April 30

by Mike Wall,
SPACE.com Senior Writer

A private spaceship mission to the International Space Station is on track for a planned April 30 launch, which will mark a historic first for the orbiting laboratory, NASA officials announced today (April 16).

The launch will kick off a pivotal demonstration flight for the unmanned Dragon capsule built by the company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, Calif. During the mission, the gumdrop-shaped spacecraft will rendezvous with the space station, be captured by astronauts operating a robotic arm and offload some cargo.

If successful, it will be the first time a commercial American robotic spacecraft has ever flown to the International Space Station.

NASA space station managers and SpaceX officials met earlier today to review the Dragon spacecraft’s readiness for its debut trip to the orbiting lab. They said the capsule is on track to blast off in two weeks, but only if a few remaining issues are resolved.

“Everything looks good as we head towards the April 30 launch date, but I would caution us all that there’s still quite a bit of work that needs to be done,” Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations, told reporters today. More software validation tests for the Dragon spacecraft, for example, are among the items remaining to be completed.

“We’ll continue to work through this stuff over the next week or so,” he added. “On the 23rd of April, we’ll get back together again and just kind of assess where we are overall to see how things are moving forward.”

Making history

SpaceX aims to become the first company to launch a spacecraft toward the orbiting lab under NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program, which seeks to spur the development of American private vehicles to take over the duties of the agency’s retired space shuttle fleet.

The firm holds a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to make 12 robotic supply missions to the space station. But the scheduled April 30 flight is not one of the 12; rather, it’s a demonstration to show that Dragon and SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket have the right stuff.

Schools are prisons: Disabled boy held down and tortured by laughing teachers

Schools are prisons: Disabled boy held down and tortured by laughing teachers.

Who could possibly watch the scenes from this video and think this type of so called “therapy” would be a good thing for anyone at any time for any reason? The scene is graphic and cruel and to watch and hear the teachers standing around him laughing as the electrical shocks are being applied to his body are frightening and disgusting at the very least.

The mother claims she had no idea that this type of treatment was being administered to her son. How could she not find out about this? What thirteen year old would not tell his mother about these so called treatments? Maybe he was afraid it would get him into trouble with the teachers and he would be subjected to even more punishment.  At any rate, I find this incident to be regarded excessive as well as cruel and unusual punishment for a young disabled boy refusing to remove his coat.

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil.

My cousin Anita and her husband Robert started visiting Alaska and all that it has to offer several years ago. In fact, they spend most of their free time traveling there to experience its grand beauty and untouched pristine public land. However, she has informed our family members if we wish to be able to experience this natural wonder in its current state, we should plan to visit very soon because the landscape is changing at a rapid rate and not for the better. Because of the negative effects of Global Warming/Climate Change in conjunction with “Big Oil” and their plans to begin drilling for oil and natural gas, it’s only a matter of time before this will all be destroyed. As we have seen and experienced firsthand by a host of companies that now occupy several counties in Arkansas with the Fayetteville Shale Play, among others, things are never the same after they come in and begin their reckless and irresponsible process of extracting the natural resources from the land.

If we are to survive as a people, we must learn that our actions of developing and extracting fossil fuels from the land is not the way to progress in creating energy sources for the enormous demand we require. We are no longer able to extract these natural resources at a rate in order to meet the demand and this is only going to be more prevalent going forward. We must invest in clean and abundant renewal able energy sources and make this transition NOW before it is too late. It is time to wake up and accept responsibility for our actions and make this transition a global reality if we are to survive without destroying our plant and the environment of the only place we can call home, Planet Earth. It is the only planet we have and if we do not change our way of thinking and take action today, we are going to be too late. We have the science and technology available now to do this. It won’t be easy but it is absolutely possible. To continue down the path we have chosen by incorporating the use of fossil fuels into every aspect of our lives has been a terrible mistake. We must stop supporting this behavior and do everything in our power to encourage and support continued research, development and implementation of clean and free renewable energy sources. Stop making “Big Oil” companies rich today! They are making record breaking profits and we continue to give them millions in incentives of tax payers money in exchange for a nightmare of health related issues, environmental issues and the continued strangle hold they have over us including record high prices for the products they produce. If you won’t take action for yourself, do it for your children and grandchildren. Let’s all make a promise to ourselves and future generations to insure a brighter future where these problems no longer exists and become stewards of our planet as we should be. We are very much a part of nature. We cannot separate the two. We must follows natures lead and care for and defend it as if it were your very own child! Below is an article I received explaining the details of a specific story relating to my post. Please take a look at the story and fell free to us the link provided to take action and get involved today! Larry D. Paszli, 4/2012

Dear Larry,

caribouThe Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. But Big Oil has the reserve in its sights and will not hesitate to turn this vast wilderness into a sprawling industrial complex to drum up massive profits.

The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals.

In the rapidly warming Arctic, short-sighted oil and gas development will further stress the remarkable wildlife that lives and breeds there. The Bureau of Land Management is now collecting comments on a planning document that will set the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come.

You can help save this national treasure: Take action to tell the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development.

Censorship A portion of Kennedy’s speech before the American Newspaper Publishers Association

Powered By YouTube

Censorship A portion of Kennedy’s speech before the American Newspaper Publishers Association.

The text of this speech below…

This is a portion of the speech that President John F. Kennedy gave at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on April 27, 1961. “The President and the Press” before the American Newspaper Publishers Association.

The very word “secrecy” is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.

(…)For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence–on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day. It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations.

Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed.

No President should fear public scrutinity of his program. For from that scrutiny comes understanding; and from that understanding comes support or opposition. And both are necessary. I am not asking your newspapers to support the Administration, but I am asking your help in the tremendous task of informing and alerting the American people. For I have complete confidence in the response and dedication of our citizens whenever they are fully informed.

I not only could not stifle controversy among your readers– I welcome it. This Administration intends to be candid about its errors; for as a wise man once said: “An error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.” We intend to accept full responsibility for our errors; and we expect you to point them out when we miss them.

Without debate, without criticism, no Administration and no country can succeed– and no republic can survive. That is why the Athenian lawmaker Solon decreed it a crime for any citizen to shrink from controversy. And that is why our press was protected by the First (emphasized) Amendment– the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution– not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and sentimental, not to simply “give the public what it wants”–but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold educate and sometimes even anger public opinion.

This means greater coverage and analysis of international news– for it is no longer far away and foreign but close at hand and local. It means greater attention to improved understanding of the news as well as improved transmission. And it means, finally, that government at all levels, must meet its obligation to provide you with the fullest possible information outside the narrowest limits of national security…

(…)And so it is to the printing press–to the recorder of mans deeds, the keeper of his conscience, the courier of his news– that we look for strength and assistance, confident that with your help man will be what he was born to be: free and independent.

Money Madness In hard times, life’s a party for some GSA workers

Money Madness In hard times, life’s a party for some GSA workers.

This story is nothing less than appauling! It is one thing to exploit and misappropriate funds within a government agency. It is quite another to just rub it in the faces of everyone up to and including the tax payers especially during such poor economic times! Check out the video and let me know what you think.

GSA Again Under Fire, Now Over Video Spoof

By John Parkinson
ABC News

The same government agency already under fire for wasteful spending at a Las Vegas conference is under further scrutiny today for a newly discovered video featuring a U.S. General Services Administration employee joking about excess government spending.

The video features a GSA employee, identified as Hank Terlaje, playing the ukulele to the tune of Travie McCoy & Bruno Mars’ “I Wanna Be a Billionaire,” and rapping about what life would be like were he to become the GSA administrator, or in his parlance “Commissioner.” Among his promises, ironically, is that the agency would “never be under OIG investigation.”

“Obama better prepare, when I’m Commissioner,” he croons. “I’d have a road show like [Acting Regional GSA Administrator Jeffrey] Neely, every time you see me rolling on 20s yeah, in my GOV. Spend BA 61 all on fun. ATF can’t touch GS-15 guns! Cause I buy everything your field office can’t afford. Every GS-5 would get a top hat award. Donate my vacation, love to the nation, I’ll never be under OIG investigation.”

Terlaje, who is an employee of the Hawaiian office of the GSA, won first prize for the creative project and was named honorary GSA commissioner for the day.

The House committee on Oversight and Government Reform circulated the video, which was uncovered by an investigation by GSA’s Inspector General.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, was blistering in his attack on the GSA and the Obama administration.

“It takes a lot of work to spend $3,000 a person and at a time when unemployment was nearly 10 percent, Americans were suffering and GSA was enjoying the good times and doing so with high-ranking political employees,” Issa said. “This administration knew about this 11 months ago and they didn’t act until the press got wind of it. This is typically what has been happening in this administration. They are only transparent when they are discovered.”

ABC News spoke to Terlaje on Thursday afternoon, but he wouldn’t comment, referring reporters to GSA spokesman Adam Elkington.

“This video is another example of the complete lack of judgment exhibited during the 2010 Western Regions Conference,” Elkington, deputy press secretary at GSA, said. “Our agency continues to be appalled by this indefensible behavior, and we are taking every step possible to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.”

GSA helps manage the basic functions of federal agencies, including by developing policies intended to minimize the cost of doing business with the federal government.

Kids All Over America Are Being Put On Buses And Sent To Alternate Locations During School Terror Drills

The American Dream

All over the United States, school children are being taken out of their classrooms, put on buses and sent to “alternate locations” during terror drills. These exercises are often called “evacuation drills” or “relocation drills” and they are more than a little disturbing. Sometimes parents are notified in advance where the kids are being taken and sometimes they are only told that the children are being taken to an “undisclosed location”. In the years since 9/11 and the Columbine school shootings, there has been a concerted effort to make school emergency drills much more “realistic” and much more intense. Unfortunately, the fact that many of these drills are deeply traumatizing many children does not seem to bother too many people. Do we really need to have “active shooter” drills where men point guns at our kids and fire blanks at them? Do we really need to have “relocation drills” where kids are rapidly herded on to buses and told that they must surrender their cell phones because they will not be allowed to call anyone? Our schools more closely resemble prison camps every single day, and it is our children that are suffering because of it.

It is also important to keep in mind that much of the time these drills are not the fault of local school administrators. Often, these drills are being mandated at the state level. Our politicians have become obsessed with “school safety” in recent years, and apparently their idea of “school safety” involves deeply traumatizing our kids.

Earlier today I was doing some research and I came across a forum where a parent was describing a relocation drill that would soon be happening at a school in Oklahoma. Well, I went to public schools all my life and nothing like this ever happened when I was growing up, so I wanted to do a little digging to see if this was actually happening around the country or if it was just an Internet rumor.

Unfortunately, what I found out was quite disturbing.

It turns out that “relocation drills” are being conducted at schools from coast to coast.

For example, the following is an excerpt from a letter to parents about a relocation drill that took place in Woodhaven, Michigan….

Our school district continues to focus on the safety of staff, students, and our community. We have a detailed emergency plan so we can respond effectively to major catastrophes. We work closely with the fire and police departments from the City of Woodhaven and Brownstown Township to implement this plan. As part of these efforts, we are conducting a practice emergency drill on May 19th. It will begin at about 9:20 a.m. and conclude by 11:30 a.m. This practice drill will simulate a boiler explosion at Patrick Henry Middle School. We will evacuate all staff and students from PHMS, Erving Elementary School, and the Administration Building.

The Woodhaven and Brownstown Township Police and Fire Departments, DTE Energy, and staff from Wayne County RESA will help secure the buildings and monitor this practice drill. Erving Elementary staff and students will be evacuated by bus to Bates Elementary School, and PHMS students and staff will be evacuated by bus to Woodhaven High School.

But just putting kids on buses and taking them to other schools was not enough. During the drill, some students and school staff were instructed to pretend to be injured. In addition, parents were instructed not to call the school during the drill and children were instructed not to call their parents….

As part of the drill, we will pretend that some students and staff are injured. Pretend victims will be assessed and transported to nearby triage centers. Please be aware that Hall Road and Van Horn Road may be closed to traffic for all or part of this drill. There will be a number of emergency vehicles at PHMS and Erving Elementary School during the drill. Your cooperation is necessary for this practice drill to be successful. During drills and emergencies like the one we are planning:

• Please do not telephone the school. Telephone lines are needed for drill emergency communications.

• Impress upon your children the need to follow directions and take drills seriously.

• During an evacuation drill or a real emergency, students will be kept at their school or will be evacuated to another site. They will be released only to adults listed on their emergency contact form. Any adult picking up a student (reunification) will be required to show picture identification.

• Students and parents should not communicate by cell phones during the drill or emergency situation. Students need to be attentive to the instructions from school and safety personnel.

But at least in that drill parents knew where their children would be taken.

That was not the case during a recent relocation drill in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho….

Students at Lakeside School District walked out of their schools this morning to prepare for the worst case scenario. They were transferred by bus to an off-site location in less than a hour. But it was only a drill.

Their Bus Evacuation Drill started at 9 a.m. and students were transferred to their undisclosed emergency location and returned back to school.

“As you might expect, student safety is our first priority and security is tight even during a practice,” Karyn Stockdale, district clerk, said.

It was later revealed they were bussed to Benewah Wellness Center as their acting evacuation shelter.

It was “later revealed” where the “undisclosed emergency location” was?

I am sure a whole bunch of parents were thrilled when they heard about that.

What purpose is served by herding kids on to a bus and taking them to an undisclosed location?
